TiO2 Glossary


µgm-3:
micrograms per cubic metre cubed.

µµm:
1µm = 1 micron = 1 millionth of a metre.

Anatase:
One of the three mineral forms of Titanium Dioxide.

Free Radical:
An atom or molecule with an unpaired electron in its outer orbit, Highly reactive.

Nano:
Prefix meaning one billionth. 1 nanometer is about the diameter of 3 to 6 atoms.

Oxidation:
When an element loses an electron it is said to be oxidised, this usually occurs with the addition of oxygen, hence oxidation.

Oxyhydride (OH):
.ion consisting of one oxygen and one hydrogen atom.

Photocatalyst:
A photocatalyst is a substance which accelerates a reaction that requires light.

Rutile:
One of the three mineral forms of Titanium Dioxide.

Titanium:
A natural metallic element.

UV:
Ultra Violet; Invisible light with wavelengths between 1nm (X-ray) and 400nm (blue visible light), approximately.

VOC:
Volatile organic compound; any organic compound that evaporates readily to the atmosphere. Has a carbon-based chemical substance, produces noxious fumes and is found in many caulks, stains, paint and adhesives.
