RHINOCEROS evolved through Clean Streets Ltd from Duncan J MacLean Contracting. This business was formed in 1981 with the purchase of David Barry and David McKague formerly part of Trestle Decorating in London. Duncan J MacLean developed a very successful 25 year maintenance system for buildings in conjunction with Sikkens Paints (now part of Akzo-Nobel) Duncan J MacLean specialised in protective and decorative coatings. In 1991 we were asked by the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames to produce a coating which might deter or prevent the application of posters (flyposting) and stickers to traffic signal control cabinets. We developed and tested a coating system composed entirely of coatings manufactured in Britain. Trials for the Department of Transport were completed in 1991 after 15 months cabinets treated with the Duncan MacLean Anti-Flyposting System were still free from posters. In fact these same cabinets have remained free from posters or stickers for over 15 years.
BLAST CLEANING AND INDUSTRIAL PAINTING
We have carried out a number of contracts removing existing coatings from steel bridges and parapets by blast cleaning, chemical and mechanical means and repainting to Highways Agency specifications. We have a Quality Management System certified to ISO 9001 and the UK Highways Sector Scheme 19A for the corrosion protection of ferrous materials in highway structures
THE ANTI FLYPOSTING SYSTEM
The Department of Transport issued a guideline to local authorities as follows "... traffic signal controllers, the property of the Secretary of State for Transport, and maintained by the local authority should be treated with the Duncan MacLean Antiflyposting System."
Since then we have applied this successful system to cabinets and other street furniture in over 72 cities throughout the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Essen, Köln, Rome and Buenos Aires.
GRAFFITI REMOVAL
In 1998 we removed 160 years build up of soot, grime and graffiti from the Portland Stone facade to Wimbledon Station, this was finished and restored to its original glory in time for the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis season that summer. We have held long term graffiti removal contracts with several London Boroughs and Housing Associations. We make up our own environmentally friendly formulations for the removal of graffiti, many are based around extracts from citrus fruit, natural and non toxic.
ANTI-GRAFFITI COATINGS
We have tested a great number of anti-graffiti coatings from major manufacturers on some of the roughest and toughest locations in the UK. We now have a very effective anti-graffiti coating manufactured to our specifications. This has been applied to thousands of square metres of subway and pavilion walls around London. Graffiti sprayed onto this coating is easy to remove without damage to the coating.
